Larnaca has long been a popular destination for sunny holidays in the Mediterranean, whether you're looking for a traditional beach break or you're interested in uncovering the history of Cyprus.

Larnaca has a long and rich history, dating back more than 6,000 years. This heritage can be clearly seen in modern Larnaca, where historical buildings stand alongside contemporary structures, such as the 9th century Orthodox church that's claimed to have been built over the tomb of Biblical figure Lazarus. Even if you aren't religious, the exquisite architecture, Byzantine artwork and Baroque wood carvings contained inside make the church a must-visit destination on your visit to the city.

Larnaca isn't only appealing for its history, of course, and many people are drawn to the island for its excellent beaches and the opportunity to enjoy water sports in the warm Mediterranean waters. The waterfront area is where you'll find the majority of luxury hotels and entertainments in Larnaca, and if you're keen to step into the sea, you may be interested in taking a scuba diving excursion to see famous underwater sights, such as the wreck of the Zenobia liner, which sank in 1980. Even if you've never dived before, there are many diving schools in the area staffed by experienced instructors who can provide you with equipment and teach you everything you need to know.

It's not only the seaside promenade that's great for moonlit strolls in Larnaca either, with the nearby Salt Lake being another top destination for couples and other people who want to admire the views and stay active on their holidays. The lake is remarkable not only for its picturesque scenery, but also for the migratory bird populations that flock there every winter, including dazzling pink flamingos. Another recommended destination just outside of the city is Mazotos Camel Park, especially if you're on holiday with children and looking for ways to keep the little ones entertained while you enjoy some quality time with your partner.

Like many picturesque destinations, Larnaca has also inspired its share of artists, and as well as browsing private art sellers in the high streets and at Larnaca market, you can see the best of the city's artistic output by visiting its numerous galleries. The Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery is the city's principal art museum, which offers free entry and collects works from local and international artists. The gallery is located next to the equally fascinating Pierides Municipal Museum of Palaeontology, which is a recommended stop for anyone with an interest in natural history.

Another aspect of Larnaca and Cyprus you shouldn't miss out on is the local cuisine, which could be said to combine the best of diverse Mediterranean influences. You'll find many traditional tavernas and beachfront restaurants serving dishes such as meze meals, which are a great opportunity to try multiple dishes at once. If you're looking for something to do after the sun goes down, Larnaca also has many popular night spots where you can meet other holidaymakers as well as locals.
