The State Legislature established San Diego County, on February 18, 1850; it was one of California s 27 original counties. Today, its size has shrunk to about 4,255 square miles.

WHAT IS IN A NAME?
San Diego County s name originates from San Diego de Alcala. That refers to Don Sebastian Vizcaino, a Spaniard.
